The relief figures of the Immortals being very naturalistic together with the pine trees and rocks are formidable scholars objects to hold flowers as intended or as scroll holders.

Shiwan kilns are in Guangdong province and have a long history of producing thickly glazed ceramics in the Song Jun style and having a more natural potting feel as opposed to the refined perfected ceramics produced at the famous Jingdezhen kilns. It is this natural feeling together with the subject of the Eight Immortals that makes this pair of vases accommodating in the Scholars Studio.
