khmer bronze ewer

DSCN3138  elegantly formed bronze ewer with lid and spout in shape of a hamsa, the vahana of Saraswati the consort of Brahma. We can go overboard here with symbolism, Brahma the hindu god of creation also worshipped in Buddhism and Saraswati the goddess of knowledge and creative arts with the flight of the hamsa symbolising moksha , the release from the cycle of samsara.
Enough to say this graceful ewer was used with love and care in holy rituals of pouring water over objects of worship and devotees.
Post Bayon period, difficult to date accurately but we can assume 16th -17th century.
Height: 33cm
